TYPO3 and Drupal for modern platforms – the latest comparison

Blogbeitrag TYPO3 und Drupal im Vergleich

Content is king, even in 2025. Whether for corporate websites, intranets, digital experience platforms, or customer portals, high-quality, useful content is at the heart of every digital strategy. It must be created, edited, managed, and intelligently delivered across various channels. That is why modern content management systems play a central role in forward-looking digital projects in the enterprise environment.

We have been relying on open-source software for web-based solutions for a very long time – out of conviction and because of the economic advantages that this philosophy brings. For around 20 years, our focus has been on the established and globally used frameworks TYPO3 and Drupal. We use them to implement complex, scalable solutions for companies of all sizes and public institutions.

We now have over three decades of intensive experience with both systems. Our digital agency employs certified experts who are always at the forefront of system development thanks to ongoing training and active community participation. But how do TYPO3 and Drupal differ today, and what recommendations do we give our customers?

Many similarities – the open source foundation

Both TYPO3 and Drupal are open source systems and therefore free of license fees from the outset. Both are powered by the modern programming language PHP and established database services. A large, active community continuously advances the respective technology and works with the highest priority on security and performance.

Today, as in the past, TYPO3 and Drupal are considered high-performance, stable enterprise frameworks for professional use. They offer:

  • Investment security and future orientation

Regular updates and long-term support cycles ensure that your investment remains protected. Both systems have proven themselves to be future-proof and are used productively by leading companies worldwide.

  • integrability

Both systems can be flexibly integrated into existing IT landscapes and seamlessly connected to CRM, ERP, or SAP systems. APIs and webhooks enable modern, loosely coupled architectures.

  • Headless CMS and API-First

We have been using TYPO3 and Drupal as headless CMS for years. The backend and frontend are decoupled, with communication running via APIs. This concept is ideal for organizations that want to reach their target groups across multiple channels and devices with an optimal user experience – from classic websites to mobile apps and voice interfaces.

  • Multisite and multi-domain capability

A single installation can serve multiple websites with different designs and functionalities—a clear convenience advantage for editorial and system maintenance.

  • SEO and online marketing

Both systems offer extensive options for professional search engine optimization. With modern plugins and extensions, SEO strategies can be fully automated and optimized.

  • Security and compliance

With regular security updates, established patch cycles, and professional vulnerability management, both systems offer the high level of security that companies and public institutions require.

  • AI integration for intelligent content management

Artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly important, and TYPO3 and Drupal are keeping pace. Both systems integrate AI functions directly into content management via specialized extensions and modules. This creates new possibilities: editors can have SEO titles and meta descriptions generated automatically, create alt texts intelligently, or convert complex texts into simple language. These functions save time, reduce manual work, and make websites more accessible and search engine friendly. Thanks to the open source basis, you remain in control: no black boxes, but transparent solutions that integrate seamlessly into your processes.

This solid common ground makes both systems excellent choices for enterprise content management. But which system is better suited to your specific requirements? The answer lies in the specific strengths that TYPO3 and Drupal can bring to bear in different application scenarios.

The characteristic differences

Despite their similarities, TYPO3 and Drupal have developed different strengths.

TYPO3: The all-round talent with depth

TYPO3 is a German-language success story. It is the most widely used open source CMS in the DACH region—and for good reason.

  • Extensive out-of-the-box functionality: The basic installation of TYPO3 is already packed with features for professional content management. With over 1,600 available extensions and integrated multilingualism, it is perfectly suited for complex requirements. Companies often need to develop less and can go live faster.
  • Strong local community: TYPO3 has a particularly active German-speaking community. Support forums and local user groups offer competent, fast help in German – a major advantage for medium-sized companies and public institutions.
  • Reliable release cycles: TYPO3 follows a clear roadmap. A new major version is released every 18 months. The free Long Term Support (LTS) offers updates and security patches for three years. Those who can afford it benefit from Extended Long Term Support (ELTS) for up to six years – a perfect solution for long-term stability without frequent migrations.
  • Intuitive tree structure: The organizational structure of pages and content in a tree structure is intuitive and allows even less technically savvy editors to get started quickly. With professional training, organizations can achieve optimally usable launches.
  • TypoScript for flexible configuration: TypoScript, a configuration language developed specifically for TYPO3, offers experienced administrators elegant ways to manage content and layouts—without having to dive into the code every time.
  • Ideal for: Medium-sized companies, federal structures with multiple websites, public institutions, classic websites with modern functionality.

Drupal: The highly flexible framework

  • Drupal is a global success story. With around 1.3 million active developers and 4 million websites worldwide, it has established itself as the CMS of the enterprise world.
  • Architecture for maximum flexibility: Drupal is not a classic CMS, but a flexible framework with a lean core. This means that you don't build on ready-made solutions, but on building blocks. Modules and themes enable almost unlimited configuration – perfect for requirements that go beyond standard website functions.
  • Unlimited customizability: Drupal has proven itself particularly in complex enterprise solutions. From e-commerce platforms to community portals to specially developed business applications, Drupal sets no limits on creativity. So-called recipes help to preselect modules for typical tasks.
  • Global community and module ecosystem: The worldwide developer community is constantly producing new modules, integrations, and best practices. There is often already a proven solution for complex requirements.
  • Social features at its core: Drupal already has community features in its basic installation. For social publishing, community portals, and intranet platforms with interactive features, Drupal is often the faster and more intuitive choice.
  • Version 10 and beyond: Since version 8, the project has continuously modernized its tech stack and gained a wealth of experience with backward compatibility and support for multiple Drupal versions. Continuous development guarantees that it will remain up to date and secure for years to come.
  • Ideal for: Global corporations, specialized portal solutions, community platforms, intranets with high interaction requirements, e-commerce, custom applications.

Decision criteria for making the right choice

Choosing between TYPO3 and Drupal is not easy—both systems are mature, powerful, and secure. Our recommendation is based on a detailed assessment:

Your digital goals: What should the platform achieve in the long term? Is it for a corporate website or a complex platform with many interactive features?

Specific functional requirements: What specific features do you need? The more specialized the requirements, the more likely Drupal is to be the better choice. TYPO3 is often more efficient for standardized website requirements.

Your IT infrastructure: What systems are already in place? How should new solutions be integrated? Some architectures work better with one solution or the other.

Resources and budget: TYPO3 often requires less customization and time to market. Drupal can be more economical in the long term for very specific requirements, but requires more specialized developers.

Team expertise: Do you already have experts on your team, or are you planning to invest in specialists? The availability of experts—locally and in the DACH region—is an important factor.

Open source – a question of responsibility

We firmly believe that open source software is the best choice for digital projects – for companies of all sizes and especially for public institutions. Why?

  • No dependence on individual providers: you are not bound by proprietary licenses. The source code is open, and the technology belongs to the community.
  • More economical and sustainable: No license costs, free updates, continuous security improvements. Your budget goes toward real value creation, not license fees.
  • Secure through transparency: Thousands of developers worldwide review the code. Security vulnerabilities are discovered and fixed faster than in proprietary systems.
  • Future-proof: You can customize, update, or migrate your solution to new technologies as you wish—without vendor lock-in.
  • Ethical responsibility: Open source promotes a culture of collaboration, knowledge sharing, and joint problem solving—values that we hold dear.

Conclusion: Partner selection instead of system selection

Both systems demonstrate that anyone who wants to manage digital content professionally today needs more than “just a CMS.” It's about a platform that strategically supports content, integrates into existing IT landscapes, enables AI-supported workflows, and remains economical in the long term. This is precisely where open source frameworks such as TYPO3 and Drupal come into their own – provided they are carefully selected, properly implemented, and continuously developed. This automatically brings another, often more decisive question to the forefront when choosing a system: Which partner can help you build and operate this digital foundation in a sustainable manner?

As an experienced agency partner, we don't just “prescribe” a system, but work with you to develop the best solution for your individual digital strategy. With over 29 years of experience in the design, implementation, and further development of web-based applications, we are happy to assist you with your technological decision. Whether TYPO3 or Drupal: with our certified experts, our open project mentality, and our commitment to open source, we build sustainable, future-proof solutions that integrate seamlessly into your architecture.
